Case Study #2 (Pat)

The second child (Pat) was also two months old. He did not look at his parents and he had a nystagmus-like eye movement. This was in contrast to Chris however, in that his eye movements were very disorganized. His pupils did not respond well even to very bright lights. The main complaint from his parents was that he did not seem to look at anything.

This child had no response to either the Teller cards nor the VEP. His ERG results were all flat lines, indicating no response from the retina. His diagnosis was Leber Congenital Amaurosis. Over time he did wind up developing some acuity, but it was very poor (20/200 or worse). A child like this would need much more extensive visual services than a child like Chris.
