Case #2

This case illustrates the difficulty of doing a proper assessment of visual acuity with a patient with communication challenges.

  • 20 yr old female from the community with CP whose parents report has never had a successful acuity measurement, nor a full eye exam (yet came in with spectacles).
    • Poor communication skills
      • Limited vocabulary, minimal sign, some gestures
      • Were able to get a good estimate of her acuity by using three-dimensional models of LEA symbols so she could have the tactile input. The parents were very pleased!
